Marston’s named Mencap’s Employer of the Month for championing inclusive careers

18th March 2026

Marston’s has been recognised as Mencap’s Employer of the Month for March, celebrating the impact of our Supported Internship Programme in delivering the charity’s aim of supporting people with a learning disability to live their lives to the full.

Since launching our partnership with Mencap in September, our pubs have been opening their doors to young adults with learning difficulties, offering meaningful, hands‑on experience in the world of hospitality.

At The Wig & Walnut in Northampton, three successful placements have taken place over recent months, with our first intern, Lillie, now being offered a paid role at the pub.

Lillie, who joined the pub team last year, has spent the past six months gaining hands‑on experience, building her confidence and developing new skills through the programme, which supports young adults with learning difficulties as they begin their working journeys.

Jay Martin‑Doran, General Manager at The Wig & Walnut, shared his pride in Lillie’s achievement:

“Lillie has been a superstar from the moment she joined us. She’s grown in confidence every single week and has become a valued, much‑loved part of our pub family.

“Watching her develop her skills and build brilliant relationships with our guests has been fantastic. Offering her a paid role felt like the most natural next step after such an outstanding placement, and we’re all incredibly excited to continue supporting her on her journey.”

Marston’s Supported Internship Programme is now in its second year and continues to go from strength to strength. Working closely with specialist colleges and partner organisations, the programme helps young adults with learning difficulties gain practical experience, grow in confidence and build the foundations for long‑term employment.

Mencap praised the approach taken by Jay and his team:

“The team have fostered a positive, inclusive learning environment by encouraging questions, offering reassurance, and creating space for reflective learning. They have shown flexibility in adapting tasks for all our learners and ensuring they feel comfortable and safe within the workplace.”
