Our Planet Promise

As a business rooted in local communities, we take our environmental impact seriously, investing in cleaner energy, reducing waste and supporting the transition to Net Zero in ways that are practical, measurable and long lasting. Our Planet commitments are embedded into how we run our pubs every day, guided by clear targets and robust governance.

Our Planet Promise is to operate our business and supply chain more efficiently, reducing our energy use, emissions and water consumption, while minimising our impact on the planet.

Priorities and Targets

Our Planet Pillar focuses on the following priorities: Net Zero, Energy Efficiency, Waste & Resource Management, and Electric Vehicle Charging. Together, these help us reduce our environmental footprint while future‑proofing our pubs for the long term.

Our targets include:

  • Net Zero by 2040
  • To procure and promote energy from renewable sources
  • To reduce the volume of water consumed in our estate
  • To maintain our overall recycling rate of at least 75%
  • Maintain our FTSE4Good certification

Net Zero & Energy Efficiency

Future‑proofing our pubs for a lower‑carbon world

Achieving Net Zero by 2040 is a central ambition for Marston’s. We are focused on reducing emissions across our operations through targeted investment in energy efficiency, electrification and renewable power.

This includes upgrading pub infrastructure, electrifying our kitchens, improving insulation and cellar efficiency, and rolling out new technologies that help identify and reduce unnecessary energy use, supporting a cleaner, lower‑carbon estate.

Waste & Resource Management

Taking responsibility for the resources we use

Reducing waste and using resources more efficiently is both an environmental and operational priority. Across our pubs and supply chain, we are committed to maintaining zero waste to landfill and achieving a recycling rate of at least 75%.

We work to reduce food waste, improve segregation and recycling on site, and recover materials wherever possible. Food waste collected from our pubs is sent to anaerobic digestion, generating renewable energy and fertiliser, while used cooking oil is recycled into biodiesel. These actions help cut emissions, reduce costs and support a more circular approach to resources.

Electric Vehicle Charging

Making sustainable travel easier for everyone

Supporting the transition to electric vehicles is an important part of reducing emissions linked to transport. Through continued investment in EV charging infrastructure, we are helping guests, teams and communities make more sustainable travel choices.

Our focus is on expanding EV charging across our estate - including strategic charging hubs and hotel locations - while ensuring all electricity used is sourced from renewables.

Our Impact

Leading the way on EV Charging

Since installing our first EV charger in 2018, we have built the largest rapid and ultra‑fast EV charging network in UK hospitality, helping guests reduce emissions while enjoying time in our pubs.

Powering our pubs with renewable energy

Electrifying our estate and moving to more renewable energy is central to our transition to Net Zero, as this reduces carbon emissions and improves energy performance.

Our Sustainable Pub Support Centre

St Johns House, our Pub Support Centre (PSC) in Wolverhampton, was awarded Sustainability Champion status by the British Institute of Innkeeping in 2024. We are proud to be recognised for the sustainability measures we’ve implemented as part of the office refurbishment in 2023.

Leading the way on EV Charging

Since installing our first EV charger in 2018, we have built the largest rapid and ultra‑fast EV charging network in UK hospitality, helping guests reduce emissions while enjoying time in our pubs.

By the end of FY2025, Marston’s had 560 EV chargers live across more than 200 pubs, all powered by renewable electricity. This allows guests to conveniently charge their vehicles while they eat and drink, while supporting the growing number of drivers choosing to go electric. Since its launch, our EV charging network has enabled more than 100 million electric miles and saved over 18,700 tonnes of CO₂.

Powering our pubs with renewable energy

Electrifying our estate and moving to more renewable energy is central to our transition to Net Zero, as this reduces carbon emissions and improves energy performance.

We continue to explore long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), including direct arrangements with renewable generation assets, to increase the proportion of renewable energy we procure.

In 2025, we expanded our on-site solar programme, with 65 pubs benefiting from this greener energy, including 45 new sites in the year. By the end of FY2025, our solar installations produced over 1 million kWh of renewable electricity.

Our PSC is powered solely by electricity, with air heat source pumps providing the heating. We have integrated our training facilities into the office with two training and development kitchens which are fully electric. Our car park has EV car charging points, encouraging our team members and visitors to travel electric to the office. Early in 2024, we partnered with Nuvolt, for the installation of solar panels at the PSC. 266 panels were installed across the majority of the roof area. The panels will generate renewable electricity on-site and reduce carbon emissions associated with the operation of our office.
