Marston’s scoops major sustainability award for pioneering glass reuse initiative

23rd May 2025

Last night, Marston’s took home the coveted Innovations in Packaging Award at the 2025 Footprint Awards, the UK’s leading sustainability awards for the foodservice and hospitality industry, for a truly industry-leading initiative that is delivering real impact through reversing the traditional one-way supply chain for glass bottles.

As the first UK solution that can deliver glass reuse at scale, Marston’s pioneering partnership with Reconomy Connect and Again is successfully making reusable packaging simple and affordable for brands, whilst ensuring that bottles are kept in the circular economy for longer.

Across the 10 pubs taking part in the initial trial, Marston’s has already:

  • Processed 45,000 bottles that would otherwise have been recycled
  • Cut glass collection costs in its pubs by 43%
  • Had 10,000 bottles accepted by drinks manufacturers for reuse in the first few months of the project alone.

Following the success of the trial, Marston’s now plans to expand this scheme across nearly 600 of its pubs in 2025, with the aim of recovering more than 10 million bottles over the coming years, enabling up to 5.3 million bottles to be reused by drinks manufacturers while reducing the Group’s carbon footprint by c.100 tonnes per year.

Chris White, Energy Manager at Marston’s, said:

“This is a proud moment for our team and a powerful recognition of our commitment to reducing waste and rethinking packaging as part of our sustainability strategy and Planet Promise.”
